THE JOSH PAXTON INTERVIEW

To celebrate Leigh's birthday on July 27th, we have just uploaded a terrific interview with New Orleans’ pianist extraordinaire and James Booker aficionado, Josh Paxton.

Josh talks about his move to New Orleans, how he met Leigh, their special musical history on stage and in the recording studio, and his work on the great Polychrome Junction album.

From her Purple Heart album, comes David Bowie’s Stay ... David Bowie’s song and Leigh’s vocals, with a New Orleans groove. What else do you need? Fonky and snakey!

Purple Heart  was almost was never released. Leigh was recording the album at New Orleans’ Noiselab Studios when she took a short hiatus to recharge before heading in to work on the last few retracks. She was out of town when Katrina hit, and Noiselab was destroyed in the flood, along with all her digital recordings of Purple Heart. All she had left of those sessions was a work CD and some flyers she had printed up. 

But, after relocating and settling in North Carolina, she went to work on mastering the tracks she had, and making the artwork for the CD. It was subsequently released (as Leigh put it)as a “Gin-U-Wine” Bootleg, homebrew.

Reproduced on a computer CD burner and artwork printed one at a time on an inkjet printer, it finally went public. Some CDs were sold direct, and it was put on Bandcamp as a digital download.

Purple Heart marked her return to her rock / New Orleans roots. Songs like Slingshots and

Boomerangs (with C. C. Adcock); The Rolling Stones’ Down Home Girl; Grits Ain’t

Groceries; and, of course, My Darlin’ New Orleans – the version with Ron Cuccia’s ode to

the streets of the French Quarter as a preamble - show she never lost that fire. Check the full CD out on Bandcamp.
